Endangered Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys on the rebound!

Endangered Yunnan snub-nosed monkey.

The number of the Yunnan snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus bieti), an endangered species considered to be one of China’s national treasures like the panda, has been increasing continually over the past few years, according to xinhuanet.com.

The Yunnan snub-nosed monkey has been included in the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources Red List of threatened species.

Yunnan Snub Nose MonkeySince 1994, they have increased by at least 750 and now number more than 2,500, said Long Yongcheng, who has long been committed to researching and protecting the Yunnan snub-nosed monkey. Long is the chief of the primate expert team under the China Zoological Society and chief scientist of the Nature Conservancy in China.

Japanese asked “stop eating endangered bluefin tuna”

Stop eating endangered bluefin tuna!

Japanese people, who consume most of the Atlantic and Mediterranean bluefin tuna catch, should avoid eating the species until its harvest becomes sustainable, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) said last Monday.

Japan consumes three-quarters of all bluefin, mainly raw as sushi and sashimi, but experts agree that decades of overfishing have seen its stocks crash by more than two-thirds in the Mediterranean.

“We want to make a call to Japanese traders, retailers and consumers,” said Susana Sainz-Trapaga, who heads WWF’s Mediterranean activities.

Pakistan flood death toll rises to 1,100

Pakistan flood death toll rises to 1,100

The death toll from massive floods in northwestern Pakistan rose to 1,100 today as rescue workers struggled to save more than 27,000 people still trapped by the raging water.

The rescue effort was aided by a slackening of the monsoon rains that have caused the worst flooding in decades in Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa province. But as flood waters started to recede, authorities began to understand the full scale of the disaster.

My First Boat

This is this guy’s first boat and he was taking it to the lake, but he wasn’t quite sure of the correct procedure for launching the boat off a ramp. However, he figured it couldn’t be that difficult to do, so he stopped by his Union office for advice, and they told him…

“Just don’t let the trailer get too deep in the water when you’re launching your boat, and you should be fine”.

Well later on, he couldn’t understand what they meant by that, as he just could barely get his trailer in the water!

Here’s a picture worth a thousand words! Your gonna love this guy!!!  They walk among us, get married, have children and vote!

Gulf Water Sample Explodes When Chemist Tests For Toxicity (VIDEO)

In this video, WKRG News 5 investigates the toxicity levels of local public beaches that have been populated with people swimming and children playing in the water in Alabama. Their search ends with some explosive results.

WKRG teams up with Bob Naman, an analytical chemist with almost 30 years in the field. Naman tested WKRG’s various samples for petroleum, and said he expected to find no more than 5 parts per million (ppm). Instead, Naman finds results that far exceed his expectations: 16 ppm from waters at Katrina Key, and 29 ppm at Orange Beach.

The most shocking results came from a sample of water collected near a boom at Dauphin Island Marina. When Naman combined the sample with an organic solvent that separates the oil from the water, which he did for all the other samples as well, it exploded in his lab, breaking the container and destroying the sample in the process. Naman thinks the reaction was caused by the presence of methane gas or Corexit, the dispersant that BP has been using in the Gulf.

20 Hours Flight Training – Up Up and Away

Is It A Bird, Is It A Plane? – No Its A TRANSITION

A highway-worthy airplane moves one step closer to production with a recent weight exemption approved by the Federal Aviation Administration.

The Transition Roadable Aircraft, developed by Massachusetts-based engineering firm Terrafugia, will be allowed a maximum takeoff weight of 1,430 pounds, the same allowance made for aircraft designed to operate on water.

Other planes in the class, called Light Sport Aircraft, are limited to a maximum takeoff weight of 1,320 pounds.

“The main reason for that additional weight is the additional safety features that the Transition has — because it’s designed to be operated on the road — that aren’t found in other light aircraft,” said Anna Dietrich, Terrafugia’s chief operating officer.

Gulf Oil Slick: The Number Of Birds Covered In Oil Has Begun To Climb Steeply

It was inevitable that this would happen.

These Brown Pelicans Are Awaiting Treatment For Oil Damage. Photo: The International Bird Rescue Research Center

Despite the fact that the US Gulf Coast continues to experience and suffer from the largest oil spill in living history, the number of birds and other wildlife visibly injured and killed by the oil has remained surprisingly low—until now.

According to the latest figures published by the disaster response coordinators, over the past week birds covered in oil, both alive and dead, have started turning up in much greater numbers. Between 2nd of June 2010 and the 9th of June 2010, the total numbers of birds affected have been collected alive along the coastlines of the five affected Gulf states (but mainly in and around the shore of Louisiana) rose from 82 to 442. During the same period, the number of birds found both alive and dead has increased from 604 to 1075.

Evidently these numbers are still low for a disaster of this size however, the sharp rise in the numbers is worrying, especially since British Petroleum and the United States government have yet to find a solution to stop oil leak.

Wildlife organizations are managing to help some of the birds recovered alive by cleaning the feathers, giving them clean water and food, and eventually releasing them. However, many birds are so ill by the toxins that they will either die or must be destroyed.

In addition to harming the adult bird population, the oil is cataclysmically disastrous to the young. Nesting Pelicans have been returning to their nests with their feathers coated in oil which then covers the shells of the eggs and the young birds with harmful oil. The oil  kills young birds and prevents eggs from hatching.

Sumatran Orang-utans

Do you think Palm Oil will make me look younger?Female orangutans have the longest inter-birth interval of any primate, with a mean duration of eight years. The infant to mother bond is incredibly strong in orangutans, with the offspring remaining dependent for up to six years. Both species of orangutans are reported to survive up to forty-five years of age (and potentially past fifty), with females not giving birth until approximately fifteen years of age. This equates to four or five offspring surviving per mother possibly the lowest reproductive potential of any mammal.

Orangutan mothers are slaughtered by palm oil workers with machetes and their hands taken as proof of death for financial bonus. The babies that survive are then sold into the illegal pet trade where they may initially be treated like human babies (due to sharing 97% of our DNA, they are endearing and cuddly creatures) but later are chained and caged, mistreated and abused (an adult orangutan has the strength of seven men so an orangutan baby quickly turns into a physically unmanageable child).

What do they eat? Around sixty percent of Their diet is fruit, then around twenty five percent young leaves, the remaining fifteen percent is flowers, bark and insects, mainly ants, termites and crickets.
